Skin Deep +60
Rafael Medina portrayed nine gay men above the age of 60 living in Berlin. The series of 35mm pictures, artvideo and soundscape* are a visual research on their sexuality and their relationship to the gay community.
Embracing analog photography since 2017, Medina is captivated by the materiality of the medium and the unique qualities it gives his images. He explores the experimental possibilities that analog photography presents, pushing the boundaries and venturing into multiple exposures to create visually captivating compositions.
The “Skin deep: +60” Project was raised during the Instinct´s art residency program in 2017. In this 3 months project, Rafael portrayed nine gay cis men naked. All of them above the age of 60. The series of 35mm black and white pictures and a short documentary makes a visual research on their sexuality and their relationship to their own bodies. “Skin deep: +60” offers a poignant visual survey of the lives and bodies of elderly gay men living in Berlin. The project resulted in Medina's first solo exhibition at Village Berlin.
