A series of nine portraits
Swann Clément has chosen to represent friends he met in the Berlin gay community. These pixelated low relief portraits focus on the frontal gaze of each protagonist. Only the portrait of Norma Jeane Mortenson (Marilyn Monroe) deviates from the series with its attitude, chromatic range and framing. Also she seems absent from the whole and detached as if absorbed in her interiority.
The irregularity of the material chosen here, clay, and the pixelation of the painted subjects add to the ambiguity of the work between abstraction and figuration, between the blurred and the distinct, between the visible and the non-visible.
